Physiotherapists who have completed a post-graduate course on diagnostic imaging through the University of Alberta and are registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta are authorized to refer patients for certain diagnostic imaging paid by Alberta Health and Wellness.

Physiotherapists who are authorized to order diagnostic imaging limited to X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound imaging can order these tests if they feel it will aid in your rehabilitation. These will be ordered when there is an explicit clinical question to be addressed or when an image is expected to assist in confirming a Physiotherapy diagnosis. The ordering Therapist will explain the rationale for why they have ordered a specific imaging test and then review the results with you and how it will impact your treatment and recovery. Your Therapist will refer you to an appropriate regulated health professional when the results of the image ordered indicate that a referral is warranted (e.g. urgent care center or Orthopaedic Surgeon in the event of fracture.)
