Functional training helps you perform activities in daily life. Research supports focusing on how you coordinate your muscles rather than only focusing on exercises for strength and power (for example, having the strength to squat 45kg, but not being able to single leg squat with control reveals a dysfunctional movement pattern in the musculoskeletal system.) The goals of training are to ensure appropriate balance, proprioception, muscle strength and endurance, and joint and muscle range for the task. Often the pain that you are experiencing is not the source of the problem, but the source of “breakdown” (for example, the hip pain that you are feeling may be the result of limited ankle mobility from an old ankle sprain that was not fully rehabilitated.) When finding the true source of the dysfunctional movement, we will correct function and insure that the problem does not return. The positions that you work and relax in each day have an impact on the health of your spine. Sitting and standing with proper postural alignment decreases the fatigue and strain on your body’s ligaments and muscles. Poor posture can be a result of injury, muscle weakness, poorly designed work spaces and occupational stress. Research has shown that a program that corrects your faulty postural strategies can decrease your discomfort and fatigue.
